In modern society, there has been an increased emphasis on sustainability and uplifting the quality of life especially when it comes to health. As modern women, we all aspire to age gracefully.

 

FWA presents a pre- International Women’s Day special interactive session on Women’s Health Through the Years. We invite a panel of doctors with different fields of expertise to talk about steps to take to make our journey in life a healthy, mobile and enjoyable one.

 

Through a life course approach, acknowledging the unique needs of women across the community, the session serves to address health issues which may be experienced by women of different ages. Panellists will discuss various topics from across the life-course, which could include breast cancer, osteoporosis, cataract, pregnancy, osteoarthritis, gynaecological health issues, menopause/post menopause, glaucoma, wrinkles, just to mention a few.

 

What should women look out for? What are the key takeaways for your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s & 90s?

 

There are so many things you can do today to make your tomorrows fulfilling. Take charge and start your journey to good health today! Be aware!

Dr Kanwaljit Soin, Soin Orthopaedic, Spine & Hand Surgery

 

Dr Soin graduated with MBBS Hons (1966) and was top of her class. She obtained her Master of Medicine (Surgery) (1970) from the University of Singapore and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 1970 and a member of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 1975. Dr Soin was also the recipient of a Colombo Plan Scholarship to train in hand surgery in Australia in 1972. She was President of Singapore Orthopaedic Association in 2014 and President of the Singapore Hand Society in 1989-1990. She was previously a Visiting Consultant (Hand Surgery Department) of the Singapore General Hospital.

 

Dr Soin was a Nominated Member of Parliament of Singapore from 1992 to 1996. In 1992, she was awarded “Woman of the Year” in Singapore. In 2000 she was presented “Women Who Make a Difference Award” by the International Women’s Forum, Washington D.C. Dr Soin has held numerous positions in welfare, advocacy and professional organisations. In 2008 she received the “Singapore Medical Association Merit Award” in recognition of her significant contribution and valuable services to the community and the “Good Samaritan Award” from the Rotary Club of Singapore in recognition of her spirit of true volunteerism beyond and above the call of her duty.

 

She was a Global Ambassador of HelpAge International until 2015 which works with and for disadvantaged older people all over the world, and is the founder President of WINGS – “Women’s Initiative for Ageing Successfully” in Singapore. Dr Soin was also a Board Member of Washington University International Advisory Board Council for Asia until 2015. She was President of UNIFEM Singapore from 1997-2002. She is a Member of the Advocacy and Research Panel of National Council of Social Services (2016-2018).

 

Dr Jovina See, Ophthalmologist & Surgeon, Shinagawa Eye Centre

 

Dr Jovina See is the Clinical Director at Shinagawa Eye Centre. She is an eye specialist with a special interest in glaucoma, cataract and LASIK.

 

She graduated from the University of Cambridge with a distinction in surgery, and then went on to train in Ophthalmology in Singapore. She completed her glaucoma fellowship at the Dalhousie Eye Care Centre in Halifax, Canada. She has special interests in closed and open-angle glaucoma, and in the imaging and early detection of glaucoma progression. She specializes in performing laser and surgery for glaucoma, cataract and LASIK at Shinagawa Eye Centre.

 

Prior to this, she was the Head of the Glaucoma Service at the National University Eye Centre and Visiting Consultant at the Singapore National Eye Centre. Dr See has won the Young Investigator’s Award at the Singapore National Joint Research Meeting in Ophthalmology as well as the Canadian Ophthalmology Society/Coherent-AMT Award for Excellence in Research and the Stephen Drance Award. She has also been awarded various research grants both in Singapore and Canada. In addition, she has published numerous articles in journals and has contributed book chapters in various textbooks of Ophthalmology.

 

 

Dr Tan Yia Swam, Breast Specialist & Surgeon, Thomson Medical Centre

 

She is a specialist in General Surgery, with an interest in Breast Surgery. Her experience encompasses a wide range of breast conditions such as lumps, pain, nipple discharge, cancers, abnormal imaging, and believes in personalized treatment recommendations that respect patients’ needs and concerns.



As recognition for her patient-centric care, Dr Tan has received the KK “Service from the Heart Award” in 2016 as well as the Gold Award in “Singapore Health Quality Service” in 2018. She participates in outreach through educational talks to the public, family practitioners and students. Her passion and commitment to teaching have been recognized with the “Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence”.
 

Dr Tan also actively serves the medical community by sitting on the Singapore Medical Association Council since 2008 and has recently been appointed the first Vice-President of the SMA Council.  She has also published and presented research in articles and renowned journals both locally and internationally.

 

Dr Anthony Siow, Gynaecologist, ASC Clinic for Women

 

Anthony has been practicing gynaecology for more than 20 years. He has a passion for minimally invasive gynaecological surgery and was awarded the Ministry of Health Scholarship for Advanced Laparoscopy in Australia in 2003. He is a strong proponent of the minimally invasive surgery approach as the first choice for women requiring surgery. To ensure that each surgery has a sound evidence-based indication, Anthony constantly keeps up to date with developments in medical literature and more importantly listens to his patients' needs and concerns regarding surgery.


Anthony started Single Incision Laparoscopy in 2009. This is surgery performed with Just One Cut of 3cm in the bellybutton. He is the first gynaecologist in Singapore to perform Single Incision Laparoscopy for Hysterectomy and Myomectomy. He is frequently invited to lecture on and demonstrate Single Incision Laparoscopy overseas.  As a result, he performed the first Single Incision Laparoscopic Hysterectomy in Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam. He is among the few in the region to have done more than 400 cases of Single Incision Laparoscopy Surgery.

 

Anthony has a special interest in Endometriosis, Fibroids and Ovarian Cysts. To that effect, he has set up dedicated websites (www.fibroid.com.sg & www.ovariancyst.com.sg) to help his patients understand their conditions better, and make balanced decisions regarding their surgical, medical and non-surgical treatment options.

 

Dr Angeline Yong, Consultant Dermatologist, Thomson Medical Centre

 

Dr Angeline Yong is a visiting consultant dermatologist at Thomson Medical Centre with over 15 years in medical practice. She graduated with top honours from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2005, where she was awarded the Eli-Lily Gold Medal and the Class of 1975 book prize for obstetrics and gynaecology. She subsequently completed her specialist training as a dermatologist at NSC and was awarded her Certificate of Specialist Accreditation in Dermatology by the Ministry of Health (MOH) in 2013. Her accolades include the Healthcare Humanity Award (2011) for her overseas humanitarian work and the National Skin Centre Service Champion Gold Award (2012) for exemplary patient care.



Dr Yong was previously awarded a Health Manpower Development Programme Scholarship to pursue a year-long fellowship at the world-renowned St John’s Institute of Dermatology (London) where she was trained in Mohs Micrographic Surgery and cutaneous reconstruction alongside other dermatologic surgery and laser procedures. This was followed by a second fellowship at the prestigious Mount Sinai Hospital (New York), where Dr Yong underwent further sub-speciality training in Hair Transplantation, Cosmetic and Procedural Dermatology. Having completed dual fellowships in UK and USA, she is registered to practise medicine by the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC), the Singapore Medical Council (SMC), and licensed by the USA’s Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), making her one of only a handful of doctors in Singapore registered to practice medicine across three continents. Dr Yong has also completed a Master’s in Public Health with Harvard University.



Beyond her numerous professional memberships in international and local dermatology societies, Dr Yong was the first Singaporean dermatologist with the requisite fellowship training to join the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS), the leading American body that regulates fellowship-trained Mohs micrographic surgeons.



With her expertise in the medical treatment of hair loss and surgical restoration, Dr Yong set up and led the hair transplantation service at National Skin Centre (NSC). She has in-depth expertise in all aspects of dermatological surgery, from laser surgery, hair transplant surgery, and Mohs Micrographic Surgery. She was also the only dermatologist that was dual-accredited to perform both Mohs Micrographic Surgery and hair transplantation in the National Skin Centre. In addition, her prior position as a key member of the dermatologic surgery and laser division in NSC, and her extensive global training in both Asian and Caucasian skin types has allowed her to develop her skills in using various laser modalities to treat various skin types.


Besides her medical expertise, Dr Yong is also an avid educator. She is currently the NSC-Dermatological Society Singapore (DSS), Certificate of Competency (COC) trainer in the domains of botulinum toxins and filler injections. She also regularly contributes to and reviews international journals, and is a key opinion leader in the cosmetic and laser dermatology fields. Her areas of research include anti-ageing medicine, skin cancer management and imaging, hair disorders, dermatological surgery and lasers.



After having spent more than 15 years in public service, Dr Yong believes in the practice of complete top-to-toe skincare, and comprehensive cosmetic and surgical dermatology. She does not believe in a fixed standard of beauty; instead, she uses her trained artistic eye and scientific mind to offer her patients natural-looking enhancements that stay true to their own individuality and lifestyle needs.
