The FWA Women Empowered Impact (WEimpact) pillar, in collaboration with Singapore Fashion Council (SFC), is pleased to host a Dynamic Huddle to discuss pressing issues confronting the fashion and textile industry, supportive green financing and the much-needed change toward positive, sustainable practices; from the upstream manufacturing to the consumer level.

Consumers and investors today are increasingly conscious of global challenges such as climate change, textile waste and social impact. The global apparel and footwear industries account for 8% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions, almost as much as the total climate impact of the European Union[1]. Climate change has become a daily reality for millions of people and increasing sustainability scrutiny calls for business transformation and adaptation. We have seen a rise in fashion re-commerce, such as clothes swapping but is this enough? It is critical for all players in the supply chain, from manufacturers to retailers, financiers and last but not least, consumers, to take responsibility for their choices.

In this session, join us to hear from our speakers on how stakeholders, financial and industry leaders are rapidly innovating, supporting and accelerating changes along the fashion and textile value chain to enhance sustainability and wellbeing of the environment and community.

Lala Wang, Co-Founder, Preloulou

Lala is a banker with over 13 years of experience designing innovative financial products and digital experiences for consumers. As a first time mom to Louie, her now two year old son, she realised the amount of fashion waste that was being generated because parents want to dress their kids up in the best, but they outgrow these pieces every few months. She also believes the entire buying and selling experience of pre-loved clothing in Singapore can be made so much more painless and hassle free for time crunched parents. Preloulou is the culmination of her love for technology, children and beautiful clothes and was born out of her belief that dressing up our kids fashionably shouldn’t cost the planet. She holds an MBA from INSEAD and has an undergraduate degree in business from the Wharton School.

Nicole van der Elst Desai, Council member and Chair of Sustainability Committee, Singapore Fashion Council

Nicole van der Elst Desai has over two decades of experience covering the textile & apparel industry, brands & retailers, and manufacturing partners.

She graduated from the Amsterdam Fashion Institute and INSEAD's 'Leading the Business of Sustainability' program. She worked within Nike's apparel product creation group on quality and performance at its regional office in The Netherlands and its manufacturing office in Bangkok, Thailand.

She founded VDE Consultancy in Singapore since 2008 and has worked with clients such as Forum for the Future, DyStar, Sustainable Textile Solutions (member of BluWin), and Yeh Group. She is an advisor to several companies and a mentor for Fashion for Good and The Bridge Fashion Innovator; she also sits on the council of Singapore Fashion Council (SFC), and is chair of SFC’s Sustainability Steering Committee.

Mona Tan – Sustainable Finance Banker, Corporate, Commercial and Institutional Banking, Standard Chartered Bank

Currently based in Singapore and part of the Sustainable Finance Asia team, Mona is responsible for the origination and execution of sustainable finance transactions across a range of lending and capital market products for clients in ASEAN and South Asia. The Sustainable Finance team at Standard Chartered serves as a centre of expertise on a broad set of ESG topics, providing thought leadership as well as strategic transaction support for clients. Mona joined Standard Chartered as part of the International Graduate programme in 2016 and has held roles in various teams across the Transaction Banking franchise in Singapore. Most recently, she was a product manager in the  Global Trade Product team, responsible for the go-to-market strategy and bottom line for several trade products. She graduated from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, with first class honours in both her Accountancy and Business (Finance) degrees, and has passed all three levels of the Chartered Financial Analyst programme.
