With the immense and rapid expansion of the Financial Services industry in Singapore and the rest of Asia comes the question – how have women fared in comparison to this growth? Have they been promoted and given more senior roles and responsibilities, or has a gender imbalance developed in a more competitive, driven environment?
We pose this and other timely questions about women’s career prospects in Financial Services to a panel of senior women in the Asset Management space, an area of growth in Asia as wealth in the region multiplies and in which many Financial Institutions are keen on developing and retaining talent.

Key Note Speaker:
Liew Tzu Mi
Liew Tzu Mi is a Managing Director at the GIC. She is currently the Deputy Head of Fixed Income. In this role, she assists in charting the longer term business plan, build new capabilities and drive investment performance in the various strategies in Fixed Income.
Tzu Mi is also concurrently the Head of Global Macro team in Fixed Income and serves as a member of the Investment Committee of the department. The Global Macro team manages 3 key products - Fixed Income Total Return, Government Bonds and Global Inflation-linked Bonds.
Since joining the GIC in 1998, Tzu Mi spent many years in Global Emerging Markets team and Global Sector Rotation team in Fixed Income. She was responsible for the Emerging Markets business in Fixed Income and Foreign Exchange between 2008 and 2010, and also headed up the Macro Research and Strategy team at its inception in 2011 in the department. She is a member of China Business Group, and Currency and Risk Management Group in the GIC.
Tzu Mi was awarded GIC scholarship and graduated with a BA (Hon.) First Class in Engineering from Cambridge University, UK, as well as a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University, USA. She is a CFA charter holder and has completed the INSEAD Advanced Management Programme in 2014.

Jackie Chew
Jackie Chew is the Chief Executive Officer for Eastspring Investments in Singapore. The Singapore office is the largest of the asset manager’s 11 offices in Asia, with almost 300 staff, and serves as Eastspring’s central investment hub.
Prior to joining Eastspring in December 2013, Jackie was the Regional Director of Group-wide Internal Audit Asia for Prudential Corporation Asia. In this role, Jackie was responsible for the internal audit function for all of Prudential’s businesses in Asia, including asset management and life insurance. She was also a member of the Prudential Group-wide Internal Audit Global Leadership Team.
Previously, Jackie was the Chief Auditor for ING Asia Pacific, and also held senior roles at Merrill Lynch and PricewaterhouseCoopers. She is a qualified Certified Public Accountant, has an MBA in Business and a Bachelor of Accountancy.
Shirin Ismail
Shirin Ismail, CFA, is Senior Vice President and Head of Absolute Return Investment Strategies.
Shirin joined Fullerton Fund Management Company on its formation in 2003. In her current role, she is responsible for portfolio investments into global funds including hedge funds. Prior to joining Fullerton, Shirin was with the Fund Management Division of Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited since November 2000, where she was a fixed income portfolio manager specializing in European bonds.
With more than 20 years of experience in fixed income, FX forwards, money market, derivatives trading and portfolio management, Shirin was also previously a Treasurer at DBS Bank, Singapore from 1992 to 2000, managing the ACU Money Market Book, European and Asian FX forwards, interest rate derivative trading, bonds, as well as asset and liability management.
In both 2011 and 2013, Shirin was voted one of the 50 Leading Women in Hedge Funds by The Hedge Fund Journal.
Shirin graduated from Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, with a First Class Honours Degree in Business (Banking & Insurance) in 1992.
Andrea Muller
Andrea is Chief Executive, Asia, at Principal Global Investors and Executive Director of the Principal Financial Group(r).
Andrea has regional responsibility for the Asia ex-Japan locations of Principal Global Investors, including the Singapore, Hong Kong, China and Dubai offices. She has oversight responsibilities for the regional joint ventures in China and Malaysia and is also a member of the Principal Global Investors extended Operating Committee.
Andrea joined the firm in 2010 after years of experience in large multinational firms. Most recently, she served as Head of Fitch Ratings Asia Pacific. Prior to that, she spent ten years with UBS in Singapore and Paris, first as a Managing Director of the investment banking division, before moving to the asset management division.
Andrea began her career as a corporate and securities lawyer with Shearman and Sterling in New York and Paris. She received a juris doctorate from Georgetown Law Center, a Bachelor of Science degree from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, and a Master's in European Union studies from the College d'Europe in Belgium.
Andrea is a member of the Board of the Asia Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (ASIFMA), a Vice Chair of the ASIFMA Asset Management Group, and a member of the Investment Management Association (Singapore). She also served on the Board of Governors of the American Chamber of Commerce (Singapore) for six years and has additional language skills in French.
Debra Ng
Debra Ng is a Partner and Shareholder of Albourne Partners. She joined Albourne as Portfolio Analyst in 2006 and heads the Albourne Singapore office.
Prior to that Debra was Regional Business Director of Strategy and Business Development at LFC Management Ltd (Singapore), (an Asian FoHF), for two years. In 2000, Debra joined Citigroup Asset Management (Singapore) as Director, Institutional Advisory.
Before that Debra worked at Capital International (Singapore) as Assistant Vice- President with Portfolio Management support and institutional client relationship management responsibilities from 1994 to 2000.
Debra started her career as an Investment Analyst covering the Technology, EMS, Autos and small conglomerate sectors at DBS Investment Research (Singapore) from 1991 to 1994.
Debra graduated from the California State University, Los Angeles (USA) with a BSc. Business Administration in Finance with Economics in 1990.
In addition, Debra is an Executive Committee member of AIMA Singapore. She also attained the Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst designation in 2006.
Kevin Hardy
Kevin Hardy, Managing Director, is BlackRock's Head of Beta Strategies in Asia Pacific and Country Head of Singapore. He is responsible for the portfolio management and strategy teams for the institutional and iShares index equity product range. As Country Head, Mr. Hardy is responsible for the management, leadership, and strategic direction of BlackRock's operations in Singapore. He is also a member of the BlackRock Asia-Pacific Executive Committee.
Mr. Hardy has had an international career in fund management dating back to 1993 and has worked in Hong Kong, Chicago and London. Before joining BlackRock he spent nine years in various leadership roles at Northern Trust including; four years as the Head of the asset management in Asia-Pacific and country Head for Hong Kong, two years leading international sales, and three years leading global transition management. Mr. Hardy had previously spent a combined ten years in equity index fund management in London at State Street Global Advisors and Legal and General Investment Management.
Mr. Hardy earned a BSc degree, with honours, in business studies from the City University Business School in 1993.
Tim Hamons, Graphic Facilitator and Visual Thinking Consultant, Art of Awakening
Tim Hamons is passionate about creative thinking and has developed a unique visual style to transform business communications into powerful and compelling visual stories using words and pictures. Using makers and paper, or digital media, and lots of imagination, he captures the discussions at your business event or conference live, in real time, and turns them into colourful, living artefacts of the presentations and groups discussions. This way of presenting information helps to boost audiences engagement and understanding, reinforces learning and supports collective ownership of outputs, and bring the ideas and discussions to life. He also teaches others the skills of visual thinking to transform learning environments and meetings into places of inspiration and engagement.
Tim was a professional graphic designer and has been teaching creative thinking for 18 years. He has created hundreds of mind maps for economic, business, social and educational conferences. He has a visual communications consultancy in Singapore, and created visual identity programs for leading MNCs, local universities, quasi-government organisations in Singapore and the ASEAN countries. Tim is a board member of the International Forum of Visual Practitioners, member of the Facilitators Network of Singapore, International Association of Facilitators (IAF) and the Asia Professional Speakers - Singapore (APSS). He holds a Degree of Bachelors of Science in Art from the University of Cincinnati.
