FWA Brownbag: Board Diversity in SGX-listed Companies - Opportunities for Women to Rise

The 2013 edition of the Singapore Board Diversity Report* shows that a more diverse boardroom enhances financial performance in terms of return on assets and return on equity, as well as soundness of corporate governance of a firm. The findings also reveal a slowly upward trend female board directors serving in Singapore’s listed companies from 6.9% in 2011 to 7.3% in 2012. 

Esteemed professor Dr. Marleen Dieleman will be discussing the latest Diversity report focusing on the status of gender diversity in Singapore’s listed company boards, profiles of women directors and the latest research supporting the business case for having more gender diversity in Singapore. Her presentation will be followed by a discussion on how women can play a larger role in Singapore’s boards, how to get more women into senior positions and into the boardrooms, and why women talent is one of the company’s valued assets.

About the speaker: Associate Professor Marleen Dieleman, NUS Business School, Centre for Governance, Institutions and Organisations

Dr. Marleen Dieleman is associate professor and associate director of the Centre for Governance, Institutions and Organisations (CGIO) at NUS Business School in Singapore. She holds a Ph. D. from Leiden University and a master degree in business administration from Rotterdam School of Management, both in The Netherlands.
 

Marleen teaches corporate strategy and her research interests are in Asian family businesses, and in the governance of Asian firms. She has published widely on these topics, including articles in academic journals, books, book chapters, cases and reports. Her work is featured regularly in international media such as the Financial Times and she is a frequent invited speaker on governance in Asia. Marleen also teaches in executive education programs and has extensive consulting experience.

Marleen is vice president of the Association of Dutch Businesspeople, committee member of Family Business Network Asia in Singapore, and an advisor to BoardAgender.
