With Asia being an important driver of business growth, it is vital to understand the ways of its business leaders. While globalisation has led to cross-national convergence of management practices, values and beliefs, we can find that within Asia, different leadership styles, values and priorities persist. In this lunch-time dialogue, the Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI) shares from its recently-launched research, Leadership Mosaics Across Asia. Key highlights include:

  • What are the prevalent characteristics of senior business leaders across Asia?
  • Beyond local success, how should Asian emerging leaders make the leap onto the global stage?
  • In particular, do female executives in Asia lead differently? How can we help more of them step into senior regional and global roles?

Rebecca SIOW

Rebecca is Assistant Director, Research & Insights at the Human Capital Leadership Institute (HCLI). Since joining HCLI in November 2011, she has co-designed HCLI’s flagship executive development programme, the Singapore Business Leaders Programme 2012, as well as its inaugural Asian Human Capital & Leadership Symposium 2014. As part of the Research & Insights team since 2012, she has steered joint research initiatives with partners including INSEAD, Deloitte Consulting, and Gallup, covering topics such as talent competitiveness of countries worldwide, Asia’s talent challenges and strategies, and leadership development strategies for Southeast Asia. In addition, she took on the editor role for two issues of HCLI’s leadership publication, HQ Asia: Surviving the VUCA world and Is your company future-proof?

Currently, Rebecca’s key responsibility is to spearhead HCLI’s propriety leadership research, Leadership Mosaics Across Asia. Interviewing 165 senior business executives across nine Asian countries, this research explores the ways of leadership in each country and how leadership styles may need to change; suggests how emerging leaders of each country can become global leaders; and offers foreign leaders quick tips on engaging the local workforce.

Prior to her time with HCLI, Rebecca was at Deutsche Bank where she engaged in numerous change management projects for its Finance division. She was also with the Singapore Economic Development Board, specifically looking at the development of new industry frontiers such as performing arts and music in Singapore.
