Want to know about how women can play an active role in making a difference in the community? There are women volunteers known as women grassroots leaders who are from different backgrounds and races, organising programmes for women and their families as well as helping the less fortunate in the heartlands. Many women grassroots leaders have to juggle their career and family but still make time for community work. What inspires them to volunteer and sustain their interest in volunteerism?
Find out face-to-face from Ms Joanna Portilla, Chairperson of the Women's Integration Network Council, an umbrella body of the 104 Women's Executive Committees based at community centres and clubs. Ms Portilla is by profession a Course Director, married with one kid and is an active grassroots leader since her teens. She is wearing many hats in the grassroots organisations and also sits on the Board of the Singapore Council of Women's Organisations. We will also hear from another woman grassroots leader who is in the financial sector on what motivated her to volunteer. If volunteering full-time is not suitable, you may want to find out how you can volunteer as a mentor in the Groom-a-Child-to-Excel Mentorship Programme which is one of the programmes to help the young girls from needy families to fulfil their potential or other meaningful programmes.
In addition, if you are interested to learn a skill in culinary dishes, make-up or tea appreciation or just to keep fit, come and find out the variety of courses offered at the community centres and clubs at the talk. There will also be a hands-on session such as scrap booking or jewellery making.
